Seattle Rideshare Drivers Association (SRDA) is a driver organization founded on August 13, 2014, to represent the interest of Uber and Lyft drivers In Seattle. SRDA was founded following a strike that involved more than 700 drivers in Seattle. The drivers were demanding to get a fair share of their rights from rideshare companies. As a result of the strike, drivers elected a board of 7 member-drivers to represent the interests of drivers and talk to rideshare companies.
Why do we need SRDA?
We believe that drivers should be the city’s primary engagement partner on every aspect of the rideshare reforms and programs. Ridesharing is a source of income for many immigrants, minorities, and others with limited skills, while still compensating and treating drivers fairly.
What happened in the past
Although there were some interventions in the past such as the Fare Share Plan(2019), it has not had much of an impact on improving the life of drivers. Even though driving apps have become more popular, the compensation share and benefits for drivers have not increased along with it.
What are we still fighting for?
SRDA advocates for rideshare policy reforms that increase the health, safety, and welfare of drivers without altering the difficulty of their work. In the last city council budget hearing, SRDA voiced support for revenue reforms to increase the tax on rideshare trips, which will be channeled to a new Driver Solidarity and Resource Center.
Unemployment Backpay
If rideshare drivers file for unemployment and do not receive their unemployment benefits from the government, SRDA provides assistance.
